Who We Are

The staff of Calahan Funeral Home has years of experience caring for families, from all walks of life. Each family comes to us because they know we are leaders in our profession, dedicated to excellence in service, and have the highest integrity.

When we sit down with a family, we have just one goal: to create a fitting, memorable and affordable service for their loved one. Together, we explore the wide variety of services and products available, as well as a wealth of creative ideas and suggestions.

Together, we'll design a memorial or funeral service that suits their needs now, and in the future. Families who come to us know that years from now, they will have deep peace-of-mind because in coming to us, they've done their best to honor their loved one.

  • Shirley and Ed Calahan
    Dreaming Big…But Starting Small

Almost 30 years ago, back in 1983, Edward Calahan opened his own funeral service company. He started small – in fact, Calahan Funeral Service was based out of an existing funeral home in Chicago. When the owner of that firm suggested that Edward take his passion for excellence in service out into the wider world –he took the suggestion to heart.

    The Dream Becomes Reality

In 1986, Edward and Shirley Calahan stood outside the building at 7030 South Halsted, and dreamed of the day when they would open the doors of their own firm, the newly renamed Calahan Funeral Home. They set about the task of renovating the existing structure, and proudly opened their doors later that same year.

It didn’t take Shirley long to realize that she wanted to work more closely alongside Edward in the family business. In 1989 she left her career in banking to become a licensed funeral director. Her commitment, compassion, and energy beautifully complement that of her husband – and today, they are joined by their son, Edric.

    The Commitment Continues

The Calahan family, through their faith, deep sense of duty to their community, offer 5-star service and a superb work ethic.

“We’re a privately-owned family business, and we are proud to serve all families, of all faiths and traditions. Throughout the years our goal has been to provide helpful and caring service to families when dealing with the death of a loved one. It remains our #1 priority today.” ~ Edward Calahan
