Denise Marie Horton-Smith

Denise Horton-Smith peacefully departed this life on Thursday, June 18, 2026, surrounded by the love and treasured memories of those who cherished her most. Denise was born on July 12, 1953, in Portsmouth, Virginia, to the late Glethel and Bessie Horton. She was the third of eight children raised in a close-knit and loving family, sharing countless memories and a lifelong bond with her siblings. Denise was a proud graduate of I.C. Norcom High School, Class of 1971. Following graduation, she continued her education at Norfolk State University. In the early 1980s, Denise relocated to Chicago, Illinois, where she built a successful career in medical claims adjustment and processing. Her move to Chicago would also lead her to the greatest love of her life. Denise met Lester Smith, and their love blossomed into a lasting and devoted partnership. They were united in marriage on July 3, 1999, and shared many wonderful years together. Denise and Lester worshipped faithfully as members of New Life Cathedral and shared a deep commitment to serving others. After moving to Chicago’s Chesterfield community, Denise devoted much of her life to public service and neighborhood advocacy. For more than a decade, she served in the office of then-6th Ward Alderman and now Illinois Appellate Court Justice Freddrenna M. Lyle, where she was known for her dedication to constituent services and her unwavering commitment to residents. Denise was also a driving force behind Lyle for Kids, helping to coordinate youth programs, community events, and holiday initiatives that enriched countless lives. A lifelong member of the 6th Ward Democratic Organization, she played an integral role in numerous political campaigns and Get Out the Vote efforts. She was also active with the Chesterfield Community Council and the Chatham-Avalon community and proudly volunteered during the 2024 Democratic National Convention held in Chicago. Together with her late husband, Lester, Denise lovingly mentored and embraced many young people as family. She became a cherished godmother and god-grandmother whose kindness, generosity, guidance, and legacy of service will never be forgotten. Known for her warm heart, friendly spirit, and gift for conversation, Denise never met a stranger. She had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcomed, valued, and loved. Whether through a heartfelt conversation, her quick wit, her thoughtful gift-giving, or the delicious meals she lovingly prepared for her countless barbecues and birthday celebrations, Denise brought people together. She touched countless lives and created lasting memories for all who knew her. Denise was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lester Smith, and her brothers, Glenn Horton and Michael Horton. She leaves to cherish her memory her siblings, Wendy Hunter and her husband, Charles; Phyllis Horton; L. Renay Horton; Kevin Horton; and Angelia Horton; her sisters-in-law, Cynthia Horton and Lorraine Smith; and a host of loving family members and friends, including cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, aunts, uncles, godchildren, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by her presence. Denise will also be lovingly remembered through the companionship of her cherished fur babies, Tina, Peaches, and Holly, who brought her tremendous joy. Denise lived a life filled with love, laughter, joy, service, and fun. Her kindness, generosity, vibrant personality, and devotion to her family and community will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Though she is no longer with us in body, Denise’s legacy of love, warmth, friendship, and service will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her.
