Ella M. Johnson

Always the belle of the ball…Ella Never met a child she didn’t instantly love…Ella Loved all things beautiful…Ella Ella M. Jackson affectionately known as “Boots”, was born on February 13. 1934 in Brandon, Mississippi to Booker T. Jackson and Lille B. Myers. Ella had one sister, Delphine Boozer, who preceded her in death. Ella spent her formative years at Piney Woods School in Piney Woods, Mississippi, the renowned historically black boarding school. Ella received her Bachelors in Education from Sterling College, Sterling, KS. She later received her Masters in Education from National College of Education, Chicago, IL. Ella loved the youngest of learners and her career was always geared toward the first graders. She began her teaching career at Lawson Elementary and finished at Robert A. Black Elementary, retiring after 36 years in public education. Ella made and indelible impact on her students as evidenced by many that would stop by her home later in life just to say “Hello Mrs. Johnson.” In 1960, Ella married the love of her life, Joseph J. Johnson who preceded her in death. From this union two children were born: Daphne and Derrick. Ella loved the Lord and was a long and faithful member of St. Mark United Methodist Church. She always looked forward to attending the annual Christmas production of Handel’s Messiah. Things that brought joy to Ella were line dancing, shopping, and gardening. She especially enjoyed tennis where she made many lifelong friends. Because of her love for the arts Ella was an active member of the Chicago Sinfonietta and you could often find her taking in local concerts in the summer. Ella was quite the jetsetter. Her love of travel took her to many continents. While flying was great, her preference was cruising. Joe and Ella enjoyed many adventures and experiences and shared their delights with everyone. Ella was blessed to have wonderful friends all her life, and she cherished each of those relationships. Her home was host to many gatherings, as she was always a gracious and welcoming hostess. Ella leaves a wonderful legacy to cherish: daughter, Daphne; son Derrick (Bernice); grandchildren: Alexa and Bryce; an extended family of many dear friends and caring neighbors.
