Mozetta Owens

Mozetta Owens, affectionately known as "Mo," was born on August 25, 1934, in Rayville, Louisiana, to the late John and Annie Sandifor. She graduated from Rayville High School in 1954 and later attended Grambling State University. Mo began her barbering career by opening an all-female barbershop at 63rd and Halsted in Chicago. She later joined her husband, Joe Owens, at their barbershop located at 69th and Halsted, where they worked side by side for more than 50 years. Throughout her remarkable 60-year career, Mo served generations of clients with skill, dedication, and genuine care. Mozetta was known not only for her talent as a barber but also for the advice she freely shared with her clients. With her quick wit, sharp answers, and honest guidance, she left a lasting impression on generations of people who sat in her chair. She also loved celebrating life and bringing people together. For more than 45 years, Mozetta hosted an annual birthday celebration affectionately known as the "Alley Party." It became a cherished tradition for family, friends, neighbors, and loved ones who gathered each year to celebrate with her. Mozetta was a faithful member of Trinity United Church of Christ, where she worshiped under the leadership of Reverend Jeremiah Wright and later Pastor Moss. She was united in marriage to Joe Owens in 1954, and together they were blessed with three children: Earl, Elando, and Jozel. Mozetta was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joe Owens; her two sons, Earl and Elando Owens; and her grandson, Steven. She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted daughter, Jozel (Erik); her grandchildren, Earl, Sabrina, Sheena (David), and Josef (Cara); 7 great grand children and her caregiver, Valaria, whose unselfish service and devoted care will always be remembered. She also leaves extended family members, friends, longtime clients, church family, neighbors, and all whose lives she touched throughout her remarkable life. Mozetta will be remembered for her strength, faith, dedication, quick wit, generosity, and the joy she brought to others. Her life and legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
