Pearlie Moton Farmer

Pearlie Moton Farmer was born on September 28, 1948, in Hollandale, Mississippi, to her loving parents George and Kattie Moton. She was one of several siblings. In 1972, she was joined in holy matrimony with Edgar O. Farmer. Her parents and her husband all preceded her in death. Pearlie attended and graduated from Hirsch High School in Chicago, Illinois, and later earned her degree in Early Childhood Education from DePaul University. Her love for learning led her to continue her academic journey, pursuing additional post-secondary degrees from both DePaul University and Governors State University, along with numerous professional certifications. Pearlie dedicated over 35 years of service to the Chicago Public Schools, teaching Pre-K through fourth grade at Brian Piccolo Elementary School. She was deeply passionate about education and continued to share her gift by teaching others to read during her retirement. Pearlie truly embraced retirement. She loved attending theatre performances and was an avid supporter of the arts, frequently visiting The Court Theatre, Steppenwolf, and Goodman Theatre. She enjoyed peaceful walks around her beloved Hyde Park neighborhood and regular shopping trips to Trader Joe’s. A lifelong resident of Harper Square Cooperative, she cherished every moment spent with her grandson Miles—exploring nature, nurturing his curiosity, and celebrating each new discovery. She also filled her days with workouts alongside her beloved group at the South Side YMCA, where she was a familiar and cherished presence, as well as monthly lunches with “The Sitdown” ladies. In 1985, Pearlie joined Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, rededicating her life to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, under the leadership of the late Reverend Gordon A. Humphrey. She faithfully served as a Sunday School teacher, a role that beautifully reflected her lifelong commitment to education, mentorship, and spiritual growth. Pearlie was known for her patience, kindness, and humble spirit. She believed deeply in the importance of family and was affectionately known as the family photographer and historian. At every family gathering, she could be found with her phone in hand, capturing moments and preserving memories for generations to come. Pearlie leaves to cherish her memory her devoted daughter, Janine; her son-in-law, Miles III; and her beloved grandson, Miles IV. She is also lovingly remembered by her siblings Herbert, Kattie, and Cynthia; her nieces and nephews Candace, Ron, Jade, Chloe, and Coty; her great-nephews Martell, Desaun, Darrion, Christian, Ever, and Evan; her great-niece Sunday; and a host of extended family and dear friends.
