George Anthony Moore

Matthew 5:4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Standing at 6’4”, George filled a room not only with his physical presence but also his character which made you either laugh or cry. George was a complicated man. He could be colorful, witty, entertaining and a little obnoxious; all in one conversation. He wore his emotions on his sleeve and wasn’t afraid to shed tears. George was a spiritual man and often spoke about “The Creator.” He was also deeply proud of his hometown, Chicago. While he led with a gruff exterior, those closest to him knew the unwavering loyalty and tender heart he kept for his inner circle. George was born on July 8, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, to Ernest William Moore and Synorvia Jean Moore. He was one of six children in the Moore household: Joe, Dorothy, Linda, Patricia and Augie. George received his formal education in the Chicago Public Schools system, graduating from Dunbar High School, where he distinguished himself as a stellar athlete in basketball. He was said to have a sweet left-handed jump shot. George went on to attend Huston–Tillotson College in Austin, Texas, where he served as captain of the basketball team and held scoring records for many years. During his college years, he married Clara Hoskins, and from this union their daughter, Donna Maria Moore, was born. After college, George returned to Chicago and began his professional career with Prudential Insurance, serving clients throughout the Chicago market. Early in his career, he also worked as a model and appeared in numerous advertisements for Ebony and Jet Magazines. Following his time at Prudential, George pursued his passion for education and became a grammar school teacher within the Chicago Public Schools system. George was an avid tennis player, spending time playing on the outdoor courts at Avalon Park and at the South Hyde Park Tennis Club. After teaching, George held a few colorful jobs before later joining his sister Pattie in St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where he dedicated twenty years as a physical education teacher. Locals called him “Coach” all over St. Croix and his teams won several district basketball championships over the years. After retiring, George returned home to Chicago. He was fond of live music and often attended jazz events for several years with his longtime companion, Carrie Thomas. In his later years, he assisted his sister Dorothy and his brother Ray “Augie” in caregiving for their beloved mother whom he loved deeply until her passing. George was preceded in death by his father, Ernest William Moore; his mother, Synorvia Jean Moore; his brother, William “Joe” E. Moore; his maternal grandparents, Robert Lee Cleggs and Henrietta Maria Moore; and his uncle, Moton D. Cleggs. He is survived by his siblings: Dorothy N. Moore, Linda M. Moore, Patricia “Pattie” Moore and Ray “Augie” Micou (Cassandra); his children: Donna Maria Moore, Anthony C. Wills (Samantha) and Ayanna N. Cattleya; his grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. “Peace and Love” --George Anthony Moore
