Jean Kesner Desir "Kéké"

One word to describe our son, brother, and father, would be resilient. Jean Kesner Desir, affectionately known to all of us as Kéké, was born on April 22, 1975, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, to our parents, Joseph Desir and Marie Jocelyne Leogene. As the firstborn, my father often recalled how Jean's name came to him in a dream, long before he ever held him in his arms. When I think about our childhood, I don't think about possessions or luxury. I think about simplicity, laughter, and family. Growing up in Haiti, it was just Jean, our mom, and me. We were surrounded by our aunts, uncles, cousins, and an entire community that loved us. Our biggest responsibilities were going to school and finding time to enjoy being kids. If you were looking for Jean, you'd probably find him playing *foutbòl* with his friends or hanging out at Bàtado, Jèt La, or "An Bas"—Mommy Gen's house. Those places weren't just locations. They were where memories were made, friendships were built, and where Jean's joyful spirit first began to shine. Then one day, everything changed. Jean and I received our visas to come to the United States. It was one of the happiest and saddest days of our lives all at once. We were excited about the opportunities ahead, but heartbroken to leave behind the only home we had ever known—our friends, our family, and most importantly, our mother. I remember how hopeful Jean was. He believed in what people called the American Dream. Before we left Haiti, he made a promise that he would never forget the people we were leaving behind. And true to his word, he never did. Our journey first brought us to Miami. Like so many immigrant families, we had to learn a new language, a new culture, and a new way of life. Jean adapted quickly. He learned English, excelled in school, and somehow managed to make everyone laugh along the way. That was one of his greatest gifts. No matter where he was, he had a way of making people smile. It was also in Miami that Jean reunited with our dad and built a relationship with our second mom, Marguerite, and our younger brother and sister, Jeannie and James. Our family grew, and so did our love for one another. A few years later, we moved to Chicago, where our youngest brother, Elsen, completed our family. Those Chicago years gave us stories we'll laugh about forever. Every Fourth of July, we'd pile into the car and head to the beach together. Jean loved driving the family Peugeot to Clark Street Mall, and somehow every outing became an adventure. One of our favorite memories was watching him recruit little Elsen as his "wingman," pretending he needed help with his baby brother just to strike up conversations with girls in the neighborhood. Looking back now, we laugh because that was so Jean. He had a way of turning ordinary moments into unforgettable memories. Jean graduated from Niles West High School and later earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Northeastern Illinois University. We were incredibly proud of everything he accomplished. In 1995, Jean met Nati Vita, and together they built a life and welcomed two wonderful sons. Although life eventually took them in different directions, Jean remained an important part of Nati's life, and together they shared the greatest gift of all—their sons, Jean Jr. and Charlemagne, affectionately known as Cupid. Watching Jean become a father revealed another side of him. His sons remember the Jordans he surprised them with. They remember the bright red Huffy bikes he taught them to ride. But what they'll remember most isn't the shoes or the bicycles. They'll remember the love behind those moments. Jean wasn't simply giving his boys gifts. He was giving them confidence. He wanted them to smile. He wanted them to know they were loved. That's the kind of father he was. As the years passed, Jean faced challenges that none of us would have wished for him. His health became more complicated, and eventually he moved into a care facility where he could receive the support he needed. But even then, Jean never stopped fighting for his independence. As a family, we created a new normal. Before every visit, my phone would ring, and I already knew what he was going to ask: "Ou fè manje?" *"Did you cook?"* Those meals became about so much more than food. They became our way of staying connected. They reminded us that even when life changes, love finds new ways to show up. One Christmas stands out in my heart. Jean showed up with gifts for everyone. Now... I have to admit... some of those gifts made us laugh. But that wasn't the point. The point was that he had spent what little he had because he wanted every one of us to know we mattered. I remember looking at him that day and seeing how proud he was—not because of what he gave, but because he was still able to give. That was Jean. Always thinking about others. Always wanting his family to know they were loved. These last few months, I watched my brother fight harder than ever for one thing—his independence. His determination was impossible to miss. While this isn't the ending any of us wanted, there is comfort in knowing that he never stopped trying. He kept reaching for the life he wanted. He kept believing tomorrow could be better. He never let his circumstances define his spirit. And although his body grew tired, his determination never did. That's why, when I think of my brother, the word that comes to mind is the same word I began with: Resilient. Jean's life wasn't measured by how easy it was. It was measured by how courageously he faced every challenge, how deeply he loved his family, and how generously he gave of himself—even when he had very little to give. We will miss his laugh. We will miss his jokes. We will miss the phone calls asking, "Ou fè manje?" But most of all, we will miss Jean. Thank you for loving us the way you did. Thank you for showing us what resilience looks like. We love you. And we always will.
